It is the 🎂birthday of the late Malcolm X, so today I will speak on the name: Malcolm.
I think it's safe to say, the most known Malcolm is Malcolm X. He was born Malcolm Little (he considered “Little” a slave name and chose the “X” to signify his lost tribal name. He also changed his name to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz when he converted to Islamic faith.) and was a prominent civil rights leader for African American people during the 1950s and 1960s until he was unfortunately assassinated in 1965 (RIP).
Malcolm means 'disciple of Saint Columba' and is of Scottish origin. In 1992, Malcolm was at its peak point in popularity (about one in 2000+ babies were named Malcolm). Interestingly, the movie based on Malcolm X's life debuted in 1992. FYI, Denzel Washington, the star of the film Malcolm X, named his son Malcolm! Surprisingly, Nebraska where Malcolm X was born, isn't where the name is popular. Louisiana is where you're most likely to meet a Malcolm. As of 2024, Malcolm ranks as 314th most popular baby boy name.
I've always loved the name Malcolm (to the point it was on my personal baby names list for boys as a hyphenated middle name if I ever had a son. My late father (RIP) was an admirer of Malcolm X. His middle name was Lee and so I had in mind: Malcolm-Lee). It's a very masculine, very powerful name (especially if used to name a boy after magnanimous 👑 Malcolm X 💪🏾).
Hopefully the great name Malcolm will stick around on baby names popularity lists for a long time to come!
