Is Scottie the new Billie?

๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ believes the name ๐Ÿ“›Billie was "destined for stardom."⭐ That certainly seems to be the case. Billie was the original ๐Ÿ’™masculine name turned ๐Ÿ’—feminine as a growing girl's name choice starting in the 60s & 70s with ๐ŸŽพtennis' Billie (Jean) King reigning in the sports world — followed right into the 80s with the ๐ŸŽผfictional Billie (Jean) in Michael Jackson's popular song of the same name. Then ⏩fast forward to 2019 with the rise of budding, but immensely talented ๐ŸŽคsinger Billie Eilish.

The name ๐Ÿ“›Billie (meaning: resolute protection, a diminutive of ๐Ÿ“›Wilhelmina which comes from ๐Ÿ“›Wilhelm which is the German form of ๐Ÿ“›William๐Ÿ“›Bill is a short form of the English William, Billie being the female version of it.) is currently #694 on US Top 1000. But "to track its path from blue to pink, Billie was 100% male in 1880, was 55% female just a decade later, in the girls' Top 100 by 1928, and is now overwhelmingly female," ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ breaks down.

But Billie may have some stiff competition with ๐Ÿ“›Scottie — the ๐Ÿ’™boy-turned-girl๐Ÿ’— name that's ๐Ÿ“ˆrising ⏫fast. At least in the realm of ⭐celebrity babies being born. Just recently, ๐ŸŽ™rapper Eminem's daughter Alaina (whose last name is Scott) named her daughter: ๐Ÿ“›Scottie Marie Moeller. And last year 2025, ๐Ÿ˜…comedian Pete Davidson welcomed a daughter named: ๐Ÿ“›Scottie ๐ŸŒนRose๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ quickly points out, they weren't the only parents to choose ๐Ÿ“›Scottie ๐ŸŒนRose: "Youtubers Alyssa Hyde and Charles Davis chose it for their daughter earlier in the same year, while influencer Presley Gaspard selected it in 2024." And way ⏪before Scottie's take off ๐Ÿš€ on ๐Ÿ“›name charts๐Ÿ“Š in the 2020s, in 1921 was the birth of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald's daughter: Frances Scott Fitzgerald but often called Scottie. "Scottie" is also another name for the Scottish Terrier ๐Ÿถdog breed.

๐Ÿ“›Scottie is a nickname of ๐Ÿ“›Scot (a variation of: the surname๐Ÿ“›Scott): a masculine name (a la Scottie Pippen the ๐Ÿ€basketball player) with: "clear geographic origins, directly referring to a person from Scotland. Derived from the Latin 'Scotus,' meaning 'Scottish,' this concise name carries strong cultural associations with Scottish heritage and identity. As a given name, Scot gained modest popularity in the mid-20th century, particularly in America, often chosen by families with Scottish ancestry. The single-t spelling distinguishes it slightly from the more common 'Scott,' (a cool, windswept, surfer babe-magnet in 1965, a nice dad -- or even granddad -- today) giving it a more direct connection to its ethnic origins," says ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’.

๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ describes ๐Ÿ“›Scottie as: "sassy, old school vibes, its cheerful, snappy sounds, and its fresh, unisex image  managing to feel stylish, preppy, playful, and tough all at once." ๐Ÿ“›NB๐Ÿ’ crowns ๐Ÿ‘‘Scottie: "one of the fastest rising names for girls in the US in 2023, and then again in 2024," although, "Scottie only entered the US Top 1000 in 2022, but rose 300 places in 2023, then another 400 in 2024." Scottie is high at #202 on US Top 1000 currently. Scottie surprising is given to ๐Ÿ’—girls "90% of the time, with 1517 receiving the name in a recent year." ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ believes Scottie's new popularity, "reflects America's current love for grandpa names for girls, like Frankie, Ozzie, and Lenny." ๐Ÿ“›NB๐Ÿ’ points out that Scottie, "on the rise in The Netherlands too, has replaced ๐Ÿ“›Scotlyn [๐Ÿ“›Scotlynd is a variation, belonging to "Scotty" (cute but slight masculine nickname) of ๐Ÿ˜ˆBaddies๐Ÿ“บ] which seemed to be making moves in the 2010s."
๐Ÿ“North Carolina is the state where the most Scotties (Scotty of reality show ๐Ÿ˜ˆBaddies๐Ÿ“บ was born in ๐Ÿ—บRaleigh) seem to live.
I love ๐Ÿ˜ the name ๐Ÿ“›Scottie, it's one of my favorite names  it's cute, cool and carefree  but only for a ๐Ÿ’™boy! I don't understand ๐Ÿ˜– how it came to be a feminine name ๐Ÿค” and I don't like it used for a girl. ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️ The first time I did hear it used for a girl's name is with Scotty of ๐Ÿ˜ˆBaddies ๐Ÿ“บ. I was perplexed ❓ at first but it all made sense when I found her her first name is the lovely Scotlynd. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Scottie as a nickname isn't so bad using it... but a full name? ๐Ÿคจ I see only a boy being able to rock Scottie successfully. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ On the other hand, I ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿพ‍♀️ love the name ๐Ÿ“›Scotland and all its variations: ✔๐Ÿ“›Scotlyn and ๐Ÿ“›Scotlynd for a ๐Ÿ’—girl.
Out of the two sought-after boy-turned-girl names to have: ๐Ÿ“›Billie and ๐Ÿ“›Scottie, I prefer ๐Ÿ“›Billie. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ Maybe it's because I grew up knowing Billie to be used as a girl's name too. I always knew Scottie as a boy's name until recently so it will take time for it to stick as a unisex name. Although ๐Ÿ“›Scottie is ahead at #202 and ๐Ÿ“›Billie is behind at #694  I still think I'm more likely to meet a Billie over a Scottie (I have yet to meet either ๐Ÿ˜‘). I ๐Ÿ”ฎforesee ๐Ÿ“›Scottie eventually ๐Ÿ“‰dropping on the name charts  it seems to be more of a fad name (especially ๐Ÿ“›Scottie ๐ŸŒนRose. Is she trying to be the new ๐Ÿ“›Billie Jean?! ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿพ‍♀️) at the moment. I'm skeptical ๐Ÿ“›Scottie will stand the test of time being chosen ๐Ÿฅ‡ decades from now — the premier ๐Ÿผbaby girl's๐Ÿ’— name with a boyish edge — over beguiling, beloved ๐Ÿ“›Billie. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Billie Jean, Diana, Annie & Susie: Michael Jackson Songs Featuring Female Names

๐Ÿ’Legendary ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿฝ entertainer extraordinaire ๐Ÿ‘‘Michael Jackson sang a multitude of hit ๐ŸŽผsongs — four of which I will be discussing — as they feature the first names: ๐Ÿ“›Billie Jean๐Ÿ“›Diana๐Ÿ“›Annie and ๐Ÿ“›Susie

"She told me her name was Billie Jean," Jackson sings of a beautiful woman with movie star looks. However, Billie Jean is not only a looker but a liar allegedly, accusing a man of being the father of her son.

The name ๐Ÿ“›Billie Jean (excluding ๐ŸŽพtennis' Billie Jean King) is forever associated with a woman being the ultimate homewrecker. But Billie Jean is a badass ๐Ÿ˜Ž name nevertheless. ๐Ÿ“›Billie Jean is obviously the names ๐Ÿ“›Billie (meaning: resolute protection, English, diminutive of ๐Ÿ“›Wilhelmina) + ๐Ÿ“›Jean (meaning: God is gracious, French, variation of ๐Ÿ“›Johanna) = the perfect name combination. ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ says Billie Jean peaked for girls in 1984 (Billie Jean the song was released in 1983) at #4498. Boyish Billie alone has become a popular name (#694 ranking in US Top 1000) while old fashioned Jean (on name charts since 1880) is "extremely well-used as a middle name," points out ๐Ÿ“›NB๐Ÿ’.

I love ๐Ÿ˜ the name ๐Ÿ“›Billie Jean and personally would not mind if I had been named it ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ (quite possible too because my late father was a huge Michael Jackson fan, the song came out days before I was born and my late mother said the song was played for me when I was a ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿพbaby ๐Ÿฅฐ). But with how shocking the story of the fictional Billie Jean is, perhaps having it as a first name would be too scandalous ๐Ÿ˜ฌ (at least during the 80s if a girl grew up named such). Billie Jean the song would not be the same if it were entitled only: Billie or just: JeanSeparately the names are fine but together they are a ๐ŸคŒ๐Ÿพperfect powerhouse. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿ“›IRN RATING OF ๐Ÿ“›Billie Jean๐Ÿ‘ OR ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—/10

"Dirty Diana," Jackson bluntly sings of Diana the fan of every musician, who likes boys in bands, knows when they're in town  — and waits backstage for them after shows hoping she gains stardom.⭐

Say the name ๐Ÿ“›Diana and most often think ๐Ÿ‘‘Princess right before. So for Jackson to have a racy song with the first name of a prestigous royal family member within is jaw-dropping. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ But no the song was not about the Princess of Wales! In an interview with Barbara Walters, Jackson shared the memory of a London concert with Princess Diana present: "I took it out of the show in honor of her royal highness. She took me away and she said, Are you going to do 'Dirty Diana'? So, I said, 'No I took it out of the show because of you.' She said, 'No! I want you to do it. Do the song.'"

In the US the name Diana is #243 in the Top 1000, making it a pretty popular name. ๐Ÿ“›Diana is of Latin origin and means: divine, originating from the Roman goddess Diana 'of the hunt.' ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ thinks "Diana is a gorgeous and still underused choice." Yet it is still more used than smiliar ๐Ÿ“›Diane, which ๐Ÿ“›NB๐Ÿ’ jokes, "middle-aged Diane has been overshadowed by the a-ending version of her name."

I really like the name ๐Ÿ“›Diana, it's a beautiful and timeless name. It definitely has a bit more oomph! than ๐Ÿค๐Ÿพslightly boring sister ๐Ÿ“›Diane. If Jackson's Dirty Diana were instead: Dirty Diane it would not be the same song. ๐Ÿ“›Diana was definitely the ✔right name choice to use. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

"Annie are you okay?" Jackson asks of distressed victim named Annie in his smooth song Smooth Criminal. That question sung by Jackson was, "inspired by Resusci Anne, the name of the model of doll used to teach CPR. Jackson combined the question trainees learn to ask, “are you OK?” with the name of the doll to create the iconic line," according to ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธAmerican Songwriter.๐Ÿ–Š

The name ๐Ÿ“›Annie is often a winsome (think Little Orphan Annie) nickname for ๐Ÿ“›Ann —  which means: grace (deriving from ๐Ÿ“›Hannah in Hebrew). "Annie is one of the most open and optimistic, the-sun'll-come-out-tomorrow type of name. It strikes a nice old-fashioned-but-jaunty chord that still has appeal," swears ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’. It ranks at #191 in US Top 1000 and has been a Top 20 name from the 1880s to 1907.

๐Ÿ“›Annie is an adorable name but maybe too... childish? ๐Ÿค” At least to use as a first name. I like it mainly as a nickname to the more serious: ๐Ÿ“›Ann๐Ÿ“›Anne or girly ๐Ÿ“›Anna. Jackson again, made the correct name choice in choosing ๐Ÿ“›Annie: "Anna are you okay?" or "Ann/e are you okay?" No, both sound off. ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️

"Susie got your number and Susie ain't your friend," Jackson warns of seductive woman who is out to kill, and ends up stabbing ๐Ÿ”ช someone, in: ๐ŸฉธBlood On The Dance Floor. ๐Ÿ’ƒ

The name ๐Ÿ“›Susie (meaning: lily, of Hebrew origin) is usually short for ๐Ÿ“›Susan (or ๐Ÿ“›Susannah). ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ claims, "In the 1950s and 60s, Susie was the name every little girl wanted for her very own," — and it might be — "off its fashion peak but it's still cute and perky." Susie ranks #970 in the US Top 1000.

๐Ÿ“›Susie is simple yet cutesy when used as a real life name and I like it just okay ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ  but it doesn't seem like it would be the name of a femme fatale ๐Ÿ‘„   yet it somehow it works well (over ๐Ÿ“›Susan, too dull ๐Ÿฅฑ and ๐Ÿ“›Susannah, too peppy ๐Ÿ˜ƒ) in Jackson's dark ๐Ÿ˜ˆ song.

CELEBRITY BABY NAME REVEAL: Ozzy

Jack Osbourne, son of the late heavy metal legendary ๐Ÿค˜rocker Ozzy Osbourne (born John Michael Osbourne) aka the "Prince of Darkness" — has just had his own "Princess of Darkness"  — with the birth of daughter named after her grandfather: ๐Ÿ“›Ozzy ๐Ÿ’—

Her full name is ๐Ÿ“›Ozzy Matilda Osbourne. ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ says, "Ozzy is derived from the Old English element os meaning "God" or "divine", or from the Irish oss meaning "deer". This grandpa-esque nickname traditionally short for masculine names like Osmond, Oscar, or Oswald is starting to get traction on its' own, thanks to its cool, zippy sound."

Behind the Name says Ozzy is a variant of ๐Ÿ“›Ozzie (which is a diminutive of ๐Ÿ“›Osborn). BTN points out, "a famous bearer was the British musician Ozzy Osbourne (1948-2025), though in his case it was a nickname based on his surname." Biography.com writes, "he acquired the nickname Ozzy in elementary school, where he struggled with dyslexia."

I'm not an Ozzy Osbourne fan but I am a fan of his granddaughter being named ๐Ÿ“›Ozzy after him ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ  it's a very sweet tribute ๐Ÿฅฐ plus a pretty cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž name to carry as a girl.

Some Ozzy the musician fan comments on ๐Ÿ“›Ozzy the ๐Ÿ‘ถbaby girl๐Ÿ’—:

"The most perfect name she could have ever received!!"

"I love her name I'm sure Ozzy is smiling."

"The sweetest name. Her Papa's gotta be so tickled watching over."

"Yay, we have another Ozzy Osbourne! The world is right again."

NAME OF THE DAY: Daryl

With 80s ๐Ÿงœ๐Ÿผ‍♀️Splash actress Daryl Hannah recent resurfacing in the news  I will be discussing her very out of the ordinary ๐Ÿฆ„ name for a woman: ๐Ÿ“›Daryl

๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ bluntly gives credit, "actress Daryl Hannah made this a girls' name in theory." Adding, "though in the most recent year counted, about 75 baby boys in the US were named Daryl...and zero baby girls." Daryl as a girl's name ranks #959 in the US Top 1000 while Daryl as a boy's name ranks at #946.

๐Ÿ“›NB๐Ÿ’ says, Daryl is a variation of the French ๐Ÿ“›Darrell and means, "dear one, beloved." Behind the Name details Darrell as, "from an English surname that was derived from Norman French d'Airelle, originally denoting one who came from Airelle in France."

In the U.S. Daryl is used as a girl's name 7% of the time most Daryls live in ๐Ÿ“California and ๐Ÿ“South Dakota.

I think ๐Ÿค” I like the name ๐Ÿ“›Daryl for a ๐Ÿ’—girl or ๐Ÿ’™boy equally... although a girl named Daryl is definitely more different a little cooler. ๐Ÿ˜Ž In the case of Daryl Hannah's name, it tickles me ๐Ÿ˜„ because her name should be the opposite (a la ๐Ÿ“›Michael Michelle ๐Ÿ“›Hannah Daryl (๐Ÿ“›Daryl is also a surname). Her middle name is ๐Ÿ“›Christine. But Christine Hannah does not make a splash๐Ÿ’ฆ like Daryl Hannah does.

NAME OF THE DAY: Surya

Former figure ⛸ skater Surya Bonaly is back in the news again, being applauded as the first ๐Ÿฅ‡Olympic skater to land a backflip on one blade (aka the "Bonaly flip") in the 1998 Winter Olympics (whilst Ilia Malinin is being praised for performing the same backflips in the 2026 Winter Olympics) — so I will be discussing her first name: ๐Ÿ“›Surya

Surya is surprisingly a masculine name, "occasionally used for boys in 2024๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ says, describing it as a "graceful Indian choice that may ๐Ÿ”Šsound feminine to the Western ear but is in fact the name of a male god." Surya means "sun" ☀️ in Sanskrit and is the name of the Vedic Hindu god of the sun who rides a chariot across the sky.

Surya however, "peaked for girls at #4822" in 1994  — interestingly before Bonaly's rise in '98.

Bonaly was born in ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ทFrance, but in ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฒAmerica, Surya is popular ("used as a boy's name 74% of the time" though) in ๐Ÿ“Delaware & ๐Ÿ“California.

I like the name ๐Ÿ“›Surya  but when used for a ๐Ÿ’—girl's name more because it does look and sound (I can't stop pronouncing it as: Su-rye-ah ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️) fit for a female.

Kylie Kelce On Why She Chose Boy Names for Her Girls

Kylie Kelce๐ŸŽ™podcaster and wife of ๐ŸˆNFL player Jason Kelce  — defended their daughter's traditionally boy names on a recent episode of her podcast Not Gonna Lie.

๐Ÿ“›Wyatt ๐Ÿ“›Elliotte ๐Ÿ“›Bennett and ๐Ÿ“›Finnley  are their daughter's very boyish names.

Kelce was asked a question on how her daughter's names were chosen and she explodes, This next question appears to be pure rage bait. ‘What’s with the boy names?’ I’ll tell you what’s with the boys' names. We — my husband and I — liked gender neutral names for our daughters. Elliotte’s nickname is Ellie so you can f--- off. The part that I take issue with on people having issue with our names is that I actually didn’t ask. I didn’t ask what you thought about my kids’ names. My husband and I agreed on the names. We like them. You, honestly, you should try naming a human being. It’s not easy. And so, yeah, I’m good.”

๐Ÿ˜ณ

On daughter Wyatt's name Kelce says people ask: if Wyatt “is a family name” assuming, “they’re trying to find a saving grace in the fact that my husband and I picked Wyatt for a little girl.” She says she and her husband selected Wyatt, “before we knew the gender of the baby. We decided we liked it as a boy or as a girl.”

Kelce previously shared the process behind naming her youngest daughter, Finn, on an earlier podcast episode of hers saying: For the first 24 hours of her life, she did not have a name. We had discussed names with anyone we could trust to not share names. We didn’t go with a single option that we had been discussing, so there’s that." She admits that Finnley was actually a name considered for sister ElliotteConsidering we had to name four children with the same gender, we had to run it back to the archives and borrow one from a different child, and that’s what we did."

I'm not going to lie... I don't like any of these names ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️ (sorry!๐Ÿ˜ฌ)   especially used as girl's names but even if they were for four sons Kelce had instead. I find the names bland. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ I'm a name snob. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿพ‍♀️ I have extremely specific ๐Ÿง taste in ๐Ÿ“›names and I will always like a ๐Ÿฆ„unique name over an ๐Ÿฅฑuninteresting name. Now I'm not against (so much) usually boy names used as a girl name or a feminine spin put on a boy's name (a la ๐Ÿ“›Billie) but it's not my name preference. I like super girly / feminine ๐Ÿ“›names for girls ๐Ÿ’— and very boyish / masculine ๐Ÿ“›names for boys. ๐Ÿ’™

I do feel Kelce's rage ๐Ÿคฌ after the 'rage bait' caller called into her podcast to question her daughter's names. ๐Ÿคจ Because if I had children and someone questioned their choice of names, I would definitely take it personally. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

NAME OF THE DAY: Billie

The surprisingly girlie name ๐Ÿ“›Billie is originally a boy's name, the variant of ๐Ÿ“›Billy which is a diminutive of ๐Ÿ“›Bill that originates from the name ๐Ÿ“›William - Behind the Name breaks down. "While more commonly recognized as a feminine name today, ๐Ÿ“›Billie has historical precedence as a male name, particularly in the early to mid-20th century," Nameberry points out.

Nameberry says ๐Ÿ“›Billie is of English origin meaning "resolute protection." Billie is a "tomboy nickname name, part of the growing trend for using boyish nicknames for girls. To track its path from blue to pink, Billie was 100% male in 1880, was 55% female just a decade later, in the girls' Top 100 by 1928, and is now overwhelmingly female," Nameberry explains. Billie is #694 on the Most Popular Baby Names of 2024 list. The most Billies reside in ๐Ÿ“Texas and ๐Ÿ“Oklahoma.

I like the name ๐Ÿ“›Billie for a girl, it's cute enough but... I like it way more when it's combined with a second name a la: ๐Ÿ“›Jean๐Ÿ“›Ann/Anne etc. The second name gives it that oomph ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ and makes it just a bit more feminine. ๐Ÿ’— ๐Ÿ“›Billie for a boy ๐Ÿ’™ I don't like ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️ compared to ๐Ÿ“›Billy spelled with a 'y'.
