NAME OF THE DAY: Drake

With ๐ŸŽ™rapper Drake breaking ๐Ÿ’ฅ the internet ๐Ÿ’ป with the release of his new ๐Ÿ’ฟalbum ๐ŸงŠIceman plus two ๐Ÿ˜ฎsurprise albums — I will be talking about the ๐ŸŽผIn My Feelings (aka "Kiki do you love me?") ๐ŸŽคsinger's stage name and middle name: ๐Ÿ“›Drake

The ๐Ÿ—ฃpodcaster Bobbi Althoff had Drake on her show for the first time years ago, and a funny ๐Ÿ˜‚ discussion was had on his name (@๐Ÿ”Š00:35 & @๐Ÿ”Š27:33)

Can you introduce yourself?
Drake
That's not your name
That is my middle name
That's not your real name
That's my government name, middle name
Why would you go with that? What's your 1st name?
My 1st name is Aubrey
Mmm hmmm. I see why you go with that
I think my mom named me after a lawyer... My mom named me Aubrey a guy's name
Aubrey's not a guy's name
Yes it is
No it's not
Yes it is
Have you ever met a male Aubrey?
Yeah you're looking at him. I met myself
You don't even go by that because that's such a bad name
No that's not true
Why do you go by Drake?
Because it's shorter. People with two syllables are way less successful than people with one sorry...
Do you like when people call you Aubrey?
If it's genuine

๐Ÿ“›Aubrey (meaning: ๐Ÿง‍♂️elf ruler๐Ÿ“›Drake (meaning: ๐Ÿฒdragon or ๐Ÿฆ†duck) Graham is his full name.
๐Ÿ“›Aubrey is a girl's name also. ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ says, "Once an exclusively masculine name, Aubrey tipped towards feminine in 1974, and is now given to girls 96% of the time."
๐Ÿ“›Drake can also be a girl's name. ๐Ÿ“›NB๐Ÿ’ says, "The name Drake peaked for girls at #10056 in 1997."
๐Ÿ“›Drake used as a boy's name, is described by ๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ as a, "simple one-syllable name that has been on the popularity list since the mid-1980s, Drake is most associated today with the single-named rapper (born Aubrey). The name peaked at Number 197 in 2010 and has since been on a slow decline, but it still can be counted among the stylish contemporary boy names starting with D.

Drake is at #827 in US Top 1000 as of 2025.

In ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆCanada however, Drake's hometown, the name Drake was not on 2025's most popular baby names list  — Drake the baby name is at #1458 in popularity as of 2022.

Drake also is a word name, meaning: a small cannon, used especially in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Behind The Name points out, "this name coincides with the unrelated English word drake meaning male duck."
Drake as well, is a surname from the: "English surname derived from the Old Norse byname Draki or the Old English byname Draca both meaning "dragon", both via Latin from Greek ฮดฯฮฌฮบฯ‰ฮฝ (drakon) meaning "dragon, serpent."

๐Ÿ“California and ๐Ÿ“Hawaii are the US states where the most Drakes reside.

Initially, I was not ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️ a fan of the name ๐Ÿ“›Drake. I thought it was a made up ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ stage name when I first heard of Drake the rapper's name being that. I equated the name Drake usually with the lusty ๐Ÿฅตleads of ๐Ÿฅฑboring ⏪historical ๐Ÿ’žromance novels.๐Ÿ“• I used to even often confuse Drake with the name ๐Ÿ“›Declan (I don't like❗). Then I found out years later that Drake was the rapper's real name  his middle however (I like it more than his first name admittedly. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿพ‍♀️ It can get tricky, not to mix up ๐Ÿ“›Aubrey [๐Ÿ“‘FYI I almost forgot ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿพ‍♀️: I have a 2nd male cousin named Aubrey ❗ We weren't close so I'm not sure how he spells his name.] with ๐Ÿ“›Audrey. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ It makes me wonder if his first name was that instead, would he have used Drey as his stage name? ๐Ÿค” because it sounds like Drake...) and I thought that was really cool. ๐Ÿ˜Ž As I became a fan of his ๐ŸŽถmusic, I started to like the name Drake. Still I'm not the biggest fan of ๐Ÿ“›Drake the name as a whole. ๐Ÿ˜– ๐Ÿ“›Drake may not be one of my absolute favorite names  however it's still a ✔good, strong๐Ÿ’ช, masculine name that I can appreciate. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ But I am a big fan ๐Ÿ˜ of ๐Ÿ“›Drake  being the rapper Drake's name.

NAME OF THE DAY: Garnet

๐Ÿ“›Garnet is a ๐Ÿ’Žgemstone (for the precious stone, the birthstone of ๐Ÿ“…January) and ๐ŸŒˆcolor name (derived from Middle English gernet meaning "dark red").

๐Ÿ“›Nameberry๐Ÿ’ classifies Garnet as, "one of the jewel names in use a hundred years ago, due for revival along with sisters Ruby and Pearl." Garnet ranks #956 on the US Top 1000 ๐Ÿ“› name ๐Ÿ“Š chart.

A variant of Garnet includes:๐Ÿ“›Garnette. Garnet can also be spelled with two t's: ๐Ÿ“›Garnett and used as a boy's name. Garnet can also be a surname.๐Ÿ“›

Garnets live mainly in ๐Ÿ“Ohio and ๐Ÿ“West Virginia.

I really like the name ๐Ÿ“›Garnet as I'm ๐Ÿ“…January born. ๐ŸŽ‚ I'm a big fan of birthstone names in general however. And Garnet is one of the more unusual, less ๐Ÿ’Žjewel names ๐Ÿ“›๐Ÿ“ƒused — unfortunately  because it's a great name. I see ๐Ÿ“›Garnet as a unisex name but it leans towards it being a boy's ๐Ÿ’™ name more so in my eyes. I absolutely love the cute, alt spelled ๐Ÿ“›Garnette if used for a girl. ๐Ÿ’—

TV CHARACTER NAME OF INTEREST: Monet

๐Ÿ“›Monet is the hip, chic name played by ๐ŸŽคMary J. Blige  as a ruthless ๐Ÿ‘‘queen pin  on the ๐Ÿ“บ tv show Power Book II: Ghost. ๐Ÿ‘ป

Monet is of French origin according to Nameberry and is a "favorite of the Bohemian set." Behind the Name says Monet is: "from a French surname that was derived from either Hamon or Edmond. This was the surname of the French impressionist painter Claude Monet."

The most Monets live in ๐Ÿ“California and ๐Ÿ“District of Columbia.

Monet reminds me of the name Monroe, being it is a last name that doubles as a first name too and ๐Ÿ”Šsounds similar. And just like with Monroe, I like Monet more so for a girl over a boy (it is #1131 on The Bump ๐Ÿ‘ถ Boy ๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿ“›Names list ๐Ÿ“ƒ) being named. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

I really love the name ๐Ÿ“›Monet. It's a pretty name but also a bougie name. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿพ‍♀️ It really does have an 'upper class' ๐Ÿ’ญ feel to it as pointed out on Behind the Name in the comments. With how fashionable Monet is, I'm very surprised ๐Ÿคจ it's not on the most Popular Baby Names list via SSA as of recent (although it is in Nameberry's Top 1000 chart ๐Ÿ“Š).

How many Sarovers are there?

Sarover Aujla of the reality show  ❤️Love Is Blind๐Ÿซฃ UK๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง (season two) believes she is the only ๐Ÿ“›Sarover out there.

When she is in the pods meeting a potential romantic interest named Chris and they introduce themselves, he says: "I've never heard that name before in my life."

Sarover replies: "I've actually googled my name before I do think I'm one of the only ones."

I googled ๐Ÿง Sarover's name too and she may just be right... I couldn't find anything on a Sarover ๐Ÿค”spelled like hers beyond ๐Ÿ“›Sarover as a surname. However, I did find a ๐Ÿ“›Sarovar as a first name. I assumed since the two names are so similar, Sarover is a variant of Sarovar. But Sarovar is supposedly a masculine name (I would think Sarover more so because of the 'e' in it) of Sanskrit origins that means 'lake' or 'pond.' ๐ŸŒŠ

I like the name ๐Ÿ“›Sarover (especially the ๐Ÿ”‰'Sara' sounding part) because it's literally one of a kind, bonus being it's an Indian name. ✔ Hopefully Sarover Aujla finds another ๐Ÿ“›namesake ๐Ÿ‘ฏ at some point in time so they can have a cool bond being one of the few women named ๐Ÿ“›Sarover๐Ÿคž๐Ÿพ

Thanks to Sydney Sweeney — Sydney isn't an old man's name anymore

The name bible for name enthusiasts, Nameberry, deems the name ๐Ÿ“›Sydney, an "original old๐Ÿ‘ด man name" (akin to the name ๐Ÿ“›Monroe) adopted for girls (from ๐Ÿ“›Sidney), that has been having somewhat of a revival.

Thanks to in vogue actress and ๐Ÿ‘–jean controversy queen: Sydney Sweeney (recently crowned 'The Most Wanted Woman In America'), the name Sydney is definitely not viewed in that light now. "Cool girl actress Sydney Sweeney, of Euphoria and White Lotus, is doing a lot to burnish Sydney's image," Nameberry praises.

The name Sydney is of French origin meaning, "Saint Denis." Behind the Name explains further on Sydney: "From a surname that was a variant of the surname SidneyThis is the name of the largest city in Australia, which was named for Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney in 1788. Formerly used by both genders, since the 1980s this spelling of the name has been mostly feminine."

Sydney is #288 on the Most Popular Baby Names list for girls in 2024. "Sydney's popularity may be down but she's not out," Nameberry assures, where as "Sydney was a hot girls' name in the 1990s." California is where the most girls and women name Sydney reside.

I have a love/"hate" relationship with the name Sydney I admit. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ I like the name Sydney because it originates from the name ๐Ÿ“›Sidney, which is personal to me — being it is my maternal grandfather's (RIP) first name (literally an "old๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿพ man's name" ๐Ÿ˜ฏ). Here is where it gets tricky: my own name (I surprisingly was not named after my maternal grandfather) begins with Sid (so that is what people see/read first) but it is ๐Ÿ“ขnot pronounced "Sid" as is Sidney. Yet everyone assumes it is pronounced like Sidney which is wrong and which has irked me most of my life (until very recently actually as I embraced using the stage name Sid). ๐Ÿ˜ซ An ex once suggested I name our future son Sidney had we had one together, and I didn't want to tell him I was against the name! ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️ Now actually, I would consider the idea ๐Ÿ’ก...

With Sydney being spelled as is, it can be 'hard' and confusing. ๐Ÿค” I immediately think Sidney still and so I start writing it S-i-d usually out of habit. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฟ‍♀️ When I see Sydney I also think of the sweeter ๐Ÿ“›Syndee (alternative spelling of the name ๐Ÿ“›Cindy). I do however, like how Sydney looks rather if it were spelled as its origin name Sidney (it doesn't bother me if ๐Ÿ“›Sidney is used for a girl but on the flipside I do not like when ๐Ÿ“›Sydney is used for a boy ๐Ÿ˜ฌ— the S-y-d gives it a more feminine, plus edgy look. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

I've met one Sydney so far — a tattoo artist — and she definitely was a cool girl. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

Will ๐Ÿ“›Sydney  become the epitome of a ๐Ÿ˜Ž "cool girl's name" in the 2020s? Quite possibly. Nameberry swears, "she's arguably still cool." I definitely think it will start to rise further up  on the baby name charts ๐Ÿ“ˆ in popularity with Sydney Sweeney being so sought-after.

NAME OF THE DAY: Monroe

Today is the anniversary of the beloved Marilyn Monroe's death (RIP). Therefore, I will speak on having as a first name, her ๐ŸŒŸ great last name: ๐Ÿ“›Monroe

Monroe (wasn't Marilyn's real last name nor was Marilyn her real first name FYI) is a Scottish surname meaning 'from the mouth of the Roe'  a river in Ireland.

"Marilyn Monroe is a famous female namesake, but her smart Scottish surname feels equally usable for either sex," Nameberry says on thoughts of using Monroe as a first name for boys. Monroe actually is used as a boy's name 90% of the time, SSA data shows. I didn't know this. ๐Ÿคฏ I thought because of Marilyn's popularity it was used mainly as a feminine first name. ๐Ÿค”

Singer Mariah Carey's twin daughter is named Monroe, after Marilyn Monroe. Carey shares in her memoir she, "wanted both of her kids to share her same initials so was searching for names that started with the letter "M." Monroe's name was ultimately inspired by actress and model Marilyn Monroe." Nameberry believes Carey's, "use of Monroe as a girls’ name did much to revive this Old Man name, a la Sydney, as a newly fashionable choice for girls." However, Monroe was surprisingly way down ๐Ÿ — at #571 on the Most Popular Baby names for girls ๐Ÿ“‰ in 2024. I really thought Monroe would at least be in the top 300. ๐Ÿค” The state where the most girls and women named Monroe live, can be found in Texas.

I love ๐Ÿ’— the name ๐Ÿ“›Monroe! Very briefly I had in mind to use Monroe as a middle name if I had a daughter because I'm a bit of a big Marilyn fan. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ I love the name Monroe more when used mainly for a girl's name because I just automatically think Marilyn when I hear Monroe. I can't see Monroe used as a boy's name weirdly but of course it is still cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž when used for a boy. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

NAME OF THE DAY: Harvey

๐Ÿ“›Harvey is truly one of those old-fashioned names that seems almost outdated today. Harvey is not surprisingly even in the top 100 and at #244 on the most popular names for boys in 2024. "Harvey previously had a respectable run as a Top 100 name in the US in the late nineteenth and early decades of the twentieth century," Nameberry clarifies. Also adding, "the genial, old-timey name that has been much more popular across the pond in the UK. It was a Top 100 choice in England & Wales from 1997 until 2021, though 2022 saw it fall just slightly."

Harvey is of French origin and means 'battle worthy.' Behind the Name's further exploration of the name explains: "From the Breton given name Haerviu, which meant "battle worthy", from haer "battle" and viu "worthy". This was the name of a 6th-century Breton hermit who is the patron saint of the blind. Settlers from Brittany introduced it to England after the Norman Conquest. During the later Middle Ages it became rare."

Harvey is interesting in that it can be used as a first or surnameHarveys is also the name of a Bristol Cream Sherry. ๐Ÿท Very coolly, there's actually a ๐ŸŒ†City of Harvey, in Illinois. However, the states popular in having Harveys reside in: California and North Dakota.

I like the name Harvey because my brother ๐ŸŽ‰ (and father) has this name! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ We both had the same middle school science teacher (at different times) who was named Harvey. My brother said the teacher remarked something to the effect of how their names were "once popular." ๐Ÿ˜•

Will ๐Ÿ“›Harvey will make it back into the most popular baby names list in the future? ๐Ÿค” It's definitely a classic name that has stood the test of time. I think eventually it will come full circle and do so. ๐Ÿ’ซ

NAME OF THE DAY: Jackson

Today is the 16th anniversary of the ๐Ÿ‘‘King of Pop๐ŸŽต Michael Jackson's death (RIP) and to commemorate him, I'll be diving into the name: ๐Ÿ“›Jackson!

๐Ÿ“›Michael was one of my favorite names since I was a young girl (as Michael Jackson is my favorite music artist since then) but that's no longer the case for personal reasons... ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I however love the surname ๐Ÿ“›Jackson as a first name. It was my top baby name for a boy in the 2010s if I had a son.

The name Jackson is English and means 'son of Jack.' Nameberry names the extensive list of ⭐celebrities who have chosen it for a son (actress Katey Sagal interestingly and her t.v. son have the same name) but swears, "its heyday as a celebrity baby name was at least a decade ago."

Jackson is liked a lot by non-celebrities as it is the ๐Ÿ“ˆ35th most popular name for baby boys in 2024. However, it surprisingly made it to ๐Ÿ“„list: The Most Hated Baby Names In America as #10 (๐Ÿ“›Michael ironically was #9 deemed for being 'boring') for boys via The Baby Name Wizard. The states where you'll most likely to meet a Jackson include: ๐Ÿ“Alabama, ๐Ÿ“California and ๐Ÿ“Florida.

Very shockingly, Jackson can actually be used as a girl's name! ๐Ÿคฏ Nameberry's writer on the revelation reveals, "No, Jackson is not the latest crazy name the girls are stealing from the boys. Oddly enough, Jackson was given to MORE girls a decade ago than it was last year, probably as a family name or as a tribute to the musicians. But Jackson's extreme popularity as a boys' name has probably made it feel less possible for girls. There have been some extremely popular baby names for girls -- Addison, Madison, Allison -- that originated as patronymics and literally mean "son of." And there's nothing gender-neutral about that."

Name Census reports: in 2023 there were 19 baby girls named Jackson! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I prefer Jackson used traditionally as a boy's name. But I do think it's a pretty creative, modern day spin that girls now have this badass name too. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I'm a big fan of everything about the name ๐Ÿ“›Jackson. ๐Ÿฅฐ I also like it can be shortened to just ๐Ÿ“›Jack as a nickname, which is another favorite name of mine. I feel Jackson is so popular it will eventually be cemented in the top 20 most popular boy names list SSA highlights. ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿพ The overly popular, classic name ๐Ÿ“›Michael was the 18th most popular boy name in 2024. Jackson being the 35th is catching up nicely ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพand I'm rooting badly for it to ⏩ surpass ๐Ÿ“›Michael. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ
