With actress Scarlett Johansson's new movie Jurassic World Rebirth movie out, today I am discussing the fiery name: 🔥Scarlett    

📛Scarlett surprisingly is a surname originally. A Scarlett: "denoted a person who sold or made clothes made of scarlet, a kind of cloth, possibly derived from Persian سقرلاط (saqrelāṭ)."   

Scarlett Johansson's rise around 2003, is a reason for the rise of of Scarlett given to girls. As of 2024 it's the 27th most popular baby girl name. I'm kind of surprised it's almost in the top 20 list for girls. I thought the unique 'S' girl name that seems to be "everywhere": 📛Sierra, would outshine Scarlett. Sierra is #596 in popularity yet I've met a Sierra before but never a Scarlett. 🤔 California followed by North Carolina is where the most Scarletts reside. I assumed Georgia, as that is where Scarlett Johansson's namesake from the classic film Gone with the Wind was set in.    

I think of more than the color scarlet when I think of the name Scarlett. I think of someone whose very alluring... 😊 But Johansson and her sometimes suggestive movie roles are probably to thank for that. 👏🏾

Mads World: Having The Same Name As A Celebrity

📰A news story is surfacing on Mads Mikkelsen being denied entry into the United States because a meme of Vice President JD Vance was found on his phone by immigration authorities.  

"About two weeks ago, a Norwegian tourist, named Mads Mikkelsen who is not to be confused with the Danish actor from the James Bond & Marvel movies..." the news anchor on MSNBC begins her report on the debacle.

Being a Bond fan 🙋🏾‍♀️, two Mads Mikkelsens is pretty cool. 😎 The name 📛Mads is a Danish variation of the name 'Matthew' (meaning 'gift of God'). Nameberry says, "Mads is a perennial favorite in Germany, the Nordic countries, and the Netherlands, where it is usually to be found in the Top 50." It was #33 in Germany in 2017 and #47 in 2019 as a most popular boy name in Denmark.  

It actual isn't a novelty for a non-celebrity to have the same name, first and last as a celebrity. VICE has the fascinating article: People with the Same Names as Celebrities Tell Us How Much It Sucks and interviews name doppelgangers of a 📛Taylor Swift, 📛Kate Middleton and 📛Sinead O'Connor.    

I can see why those who bear a celebrity's exact name, could find it maddening. 😤 Everyone wants to be an original and how can you if someone else already has your name in full? But it seems like it could be fun too at times. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Imagine signing into a hotel as Taylor Swift and getting double takes 👀 from staff seeing it's not the Taylor Swift before them. 😅

A woman named Girl

 A 39 year old woman from Houston, Texas named 📛Girl, yes, Girl... is trying to change her legal birth name to 📛Sandra. 

"Girl" goes already by Sandra however. Sandra Wardlow was raised by a first cousin on her mother's side. Sandra's mother didn't name her at birth and so her birth certificate names her as "Girl." When her mother passed away months later, Sandra was left without a legal name. She's been going through the legal process to change her name time and time again but has been unsuccessful still. 

Sandra says, "Even if I wanted to leave it as 'Girl,' they will not give me a Social Security card that says 'Girl.' I’ve been in this world for almost 40 years, and I don’t have a name. For someone to tell you that you don’t exist, or you have to prove your citizenship to some places and you literally cannot."

This is very interesting. And very unfortunate that Sandra's mother didn't get a chance to name her, before she died. What name would she have chosen for her daughter? It wasn't told why she goes by the name Sandra, out of all the names she could choose for herself. Was Sandra her mother's name? Or the family member who raised her? 🤔

Hearing the name 'Girl' isn't so strange to me because my paternal grandmother (RIP) actually had a stillborn son that was named: 📛Boy (RIP). I don't know the backstory on why a proper name wasn't chosen for him. 

Sandra's story is a cautionary tale in a sense for parents who don't name their child immediately or soon after she/he is born! Having had favorite baby names picked out for years, I personally can't fathom not having your child's name picked out before their birth. 😱    

Here's to Sandra somehow, finally achieving her dream of being legally named as 📛Sandra. 🤞🏾

A woman named Michael

When actress Michael Michele gained notoriety in the 1990s from the tv show ER, I was certain I misread her name, that is was backward and was: Michele Michael. I was wrong. I was floored hearing a woman was named 📛Michael!  

Michael Michele's birth name is seriously that (well, Michael Michele Williams to be exact). She was named by her mother, in honor of her mother's best friend, a woman named Michael. 

📛Michael is from the Hebrew name Mika'el meaning, 'who is like God?' It is a historically male name and one of the most popular names for boys (as of 2024 #18) to be named. Who doesn't know a Michael?! I've personally known close to 10 (that I can remember, there's probably more 😵) in my life so far.    

But meeting a Michael that's female? Now that's a true rarity. Nameberry says on girls named Michael: "Michael ranked in the Top 1000 for GIRLS' names for more than half a century, from 1938 until 1994. In the late 1970s and early 80s, during the heyday of The Waltons which starred actress Michael Learned, it reached as high as the 300s. What happened then? Our guess is that the rise of Michaela, the tenacity of Michael at the head of the boys' list, and the popularity of Michelle/Michele all conspired to knock Michael-for-girls off the list. I'm shocked girls are being named Michael in the 2020s. More so, I genuinely thought Michael Michele was an anomaly and "the first female Michael." And the only one even. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Actress Michael Learned came before her to my surprise. 🤯 There is a child actress cutely named closely to Michael Michele but her name is spelled alternatively: 📛Mykal-Michelle! 

I think the name Michael for a girl is really something, it's cool in one sense, but it can get very confusing (at least on paper. It's even weird writing this post and referring to Michael as a female)... 🤔 I'm not the biggest fan of the name Michael (anymore) but I still prefer it for a male over a female, call me old-fashioned with the timeless name. 🤷🏾‍♀️   

The name 📛Shannon for example, is a predominately female used name but it also is used often enough by males where no one blinks. I wonder if the name Michael will ever be that interchangeable where one isn't with jaws dropped if a little girl or woman is introduced as a 📛Michael. 😮  

I don't foresee that... 📛Michael is such a masculine name, it's just expected to be used for males. I don't consider it a bona fide unisex name (a la Shannon). It probably will always be more popular for boys to be named over girls. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

NAME OF THE DAY: Jackson

Today is the 16th anniversary of the 👑King of Pop🎵 Michael Jackson's death (RIP) and to commemorate him, I'll be diving into the name: 📛Jackson!   

📛Michael was one of my favorite names since I was a young girl (as Michael Jackson is my favorite music artist since then) but that's no longer the case for personal reasons... 😬 I however love the surname 📛Jackson as a first name. It was my top baby name for a boy in the 2010s if I had a son.   

The name Jackson is English and means 'son of Jack.' Nameberry names the extensive list of ⭐celebrities who have chosen it for a son (actress Katey Sagal interestingly and her t.v. son have the same name) but swears, "its heyday as a celebrity baby name was at least a decade ago."  

Jackson is liked a lot by non-celebrities as it is the 📈35th most popular name for baby boys in 2024. However, it surprisingly made it to 📄list: The Most Hated Baby Names In America as #10 (📛Michael ironically was #9 deemed for being 'boring') for boys via The Baby Name Wizard. The states where you'll most likely to meet a Jackson include: 📍Alabama, 📍California and 📍Florida.   

Very shockingly, Jackson can actually be used as a girl's name! 🤯 Nameberry's writer on the revelation reveals, "No, Jackson is not the latest crazy name the girls are stealing from the boys. Oddly enough, Jackson was given to MORE girls a decade ago than it was last year, probably as a family name or as a tribute to the musicians. But Jackson's extreme popularity as a boys' name has probably made it feel less possible for girls. There have been some extremely popular baby names for girls -- Addison, Madison, Allison -- that originated as patronymics and literally mean "son of." And there's nothing gender-neutral about that."    

Name Census reports: in 2023 there were 19 baby girls named Jackson! 😮 I prefer Jackson used traditionally as a boy's name. But I do think it's a pretty creative, modern day spin that girls now have this badass name too. 😎  

I'm a big fan of everything about the name 📛Jackson. 🥰 I also like it can be shortened to just 📛Jack as a nickname, which is another favorite name of mine. I feel Jackson is so popular it will eventually be cemented in the top 20 most popular boy names list SSA highlights. 🤞🏾 The overly popular, classic name 📛Michael was the 18th most popular boy name in 2024. Jackson being the 35th is catching up nicely 👌🏾and I'm rooting badly for it to ⏩ surpass 📛Michael. 👏🏾

Today is June 19th (Happy Juneteenth!🎉) so I decided to delve into the name: June   

The name June obviously comes from the month of June. In ancient Roman times, Juno the goddess of fertility, was so important that the month of June was named after her.  

June is primarily a female name meaning 'young' but it surprisingly can be used for males! Nameberry says on this rare usage: "As a masculine name, June has never been common in the United States but represents the tradition of month names used for boys (like August and March). The name carries associations with early summer, warmth, and new beginnings. For men, June offers a gentle, nature-connected alternative to more conventional masculine names. I never knew June was used for baby boys. 😮 And I actually like hearing June as a male name because it's so uncommon. 

🌺Hawaii is the state where you're most likely to meet someone named June. Out of 100k Hawaiians 103.48 are named June. I'm not so surprised because of the state's sunny, warm weather so frequently, and June is a 🌞sunny, warm month on average so it probably the best for a month name (over April, May, July or August) for such qualities. But I would have guessed California over it first. 

I like the name June just fine. It has that old-fashioned feel to it. I personally really love month names (January & October are my favs) 🙋🏾‍♀️ and 📛June📅 is definitely a classic.

Actress Megan Fox finally revealed her daughter's name: 📛 Saga! 💗 

Mgk the father of Saga, shared the very cool name in full on his IG: 📛Saga Blade Fox-Baker.

Saga is a Scandanvian name meaning 'seeing one.' 👁️ Saga is also a goddess in Norse mythology. Saga could have also been chosen for the Nordic roots as Mgk has Norwegian ancestry.

I really love this name. 👌🏾 I'm partial to 'S' names as is, and it's a pretty name fittingly. Plus the meaning is extra special, to be named after a 👑  goddess. 

I'm not the biggest fan of the middle name 📛Blade 🗡️ (it is usually a boy's name, not unisex. Interestingly, 📛Colson Baker aka Mgk is middle name-less and always wanted Blade to be his middle name)... but it is a fierce name for a little girl to have. 📑Btw, Mgk's oldest daughter 📛Casie, was almost named... 📛Kid 🤯 I'm not kidding! 😂  

📑Mgk recently explained the meaning of Saga's name @2:00: "Her journey, the five years of her culmination of coming, disappearing, coming back again, disappearing coming back again. She is an epic story and that's what Saga means. I'm also of Norwegian heritage so that's a Nordic goddess of storytelling. So I think she has a storytelling future ahead of her."

Name Days

I forgot 🤦🏾‍♀️ there's national & 🌍international 📛name 🗓️ days for first names! 🎉 

I was reminded when I saw a YouTube video band Maroon 5 posted on June 13th celebrating the anniversary of their first album Songs About Jane. In turn, they mentioned it was National Jane Day. Of course I had to 🧐 Google the day to see if it was a real thing and lo and behold it is. 😮 

I obviously love 🥰 the idea of celebrating one's first name but my only gripe is it doesn't include every one's first name. 🫤 That would be impossible probably. 🤔 And so people with extremely unique, uncommon, unpopular names are unfortunately left out from festivities. 🥳😭 

I never wanted a common first name 🤷🏾‍♀️ but... the thought of celebrating 🤗 a name holiday with other namesakes makes me just a little wistful to have a plain 📛Jane name... 🥹

When Did Men Stop Naming Their Sons After Themselves?

I wasn't aware they ever stopped... 

But apparently, the tradition of men giving their sons their first names, is a dying one. Since the 1970s the practice of patronym (fathers naming sons after themselves that has been around for centuries) has started declining. The founder of BabyNames.com simply explains why: "it fell out of style because people wanted their children to have their own identity." 

Another reason for the supposedly lack of boys having their father's name according to Today's Parent: "Other reasons for the near extinction of a “Jr.” reflect our evolving social landscape: the decline of extended families, the rise of single motherhood and the most basic fact that a lot of traditional practices have fallen by the wayside."

I'm all for fathers (Happy Father's Day! 🎉) naming their sons after themselves in the same way I'm all for mothers doing so too. My own father (RIP) named my brother after him and I always thought that was really great. I can't see my father or brother named as anything other than Harvey. 

That being said, I also respect the more creative route a father can take in naming his son other than his own name. I knew a father whose name is Justin who named his son cutely: Austin. To each his own. 🤷🏾‍♀️ 

Despite what onomastic experts say, I don't think the tradition of a man naming his son his first name is going anywhere anytime soon. Patronymics is a fundamental parental practice that really shouldn't.
