CELEBRITY BABY NAME REVEAL: Blossom

Rapper Cardi B ๐Ÿ“ข unofficially announced (๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿพ@7:04) her youngest daughter born last year, name as: ๐Ÿ“›Blossom! ๐Ÿ’— It means "to bloom."

Very feminine and pretty! I like it! ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ I think of cherry blossoms ๐ŸŒธ or Blossom the ๐Ÿ“บ tv show. I am a bit surprised the name wasn't more of a 'statement' as her oldest daughter's name is the cool name: Kulture ๐Ÿ˜Ž while her son has the very whimsical name: Wave. ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

Unfortunately she hasn't given the reason behind the cute name Blossom yet. I wonder if it was intentional for her to choose a 'B' name when naming Blossom, as Cardi's real name is a 'B' name (Belcalis). I do love a good name story. I'm sure in due time. ⏲

NAME OF THE DAY: Pom

Pom is brand new name I've never heard before (so exciting!).

I came across the name after seeing the first name of the actress who plays an assassin in the latest Mission Impossible movie: Pom Klementieff.

Pom means 'apple' in French and is a boy's name originally. It is a Korean name also. Pom Klementieff was given her name by her mother but not for the apple meaning.  "'Pom' is a combination of the Korean word for 'spring' (bom) and 'tiger' (bum)".

Pom is a really cute, short and sweet name. I like it best for a girl because I immediately think: pom-poms and cheerleading when I hear it. ๐Ÿ“ฃ

A Tale of Two Halles

For a very long time, from the 1990s to most of the 2010s, the only Halle most people would  immediately think of with that captivating first name is of course Halle Berry (@0:17): the Grammy winning actress who has been voted as one of People Magazine's '50 Most Beautiful People' before. The name Halle is just one of those attractive names, one will automatically assume the bearer is beautiful (just like with someone bearing the unattractive name Bertha, the opposite is assumed) and Halle Berry can be thanked for that.

The name Halle is so distinct I didn't ever image there could be two famous Halles but now there is. Halle Bailey has become a household name since 2023 after starring as Ariel in the live action The Little Mermaid movie. Yet, whenever I hear a Halle mentioned in the news, I still immediately think of Berry because I grew up on her. But because their last names even look and sort of sound the same, it does get confusing!

Halle Berry was actually born Maria Halle Berry. At age five her name was legally changed to Halle Maria Berry. Her original middle name was brilliantly named after Halle's, a once popular department store in Cleveland, Ohio. My Name Stats states that Ohio is where the most Halles live, which makes perfect sense since Halle Berry was born there. No surprise the name Halle rose to popularity in the 1990s when Halle Berry herself rose to stardom.

Halle Bailey on the other hand, was born Halle Bailey. She shared her name story on Live with Kelly and Mark and revealed however, she was almost named Hailey: "... originally when I was a baby, they wanted to name me Hailey but my last name is Bailey. So that wouldn't have worked. And they they ultimately decided Halle, and it's very similar to Halle Berry. But there's no one else I would rather have a similar name to cause she's so cool." Halle Berry saw the clip and responded to Halle Bailey on their same first name: "I’m JUST as honored to share a name with the very talented and super sweet @hallebailey!!"

Halle is shockingly a unisex name! But it is a boys name first, of Norse origin, with the meaning of 'Thor's stone.' Behind the Name explains Halle is: From the Old Norse name Halli, a diminutive of names containing the element hallr meaning "rock".

'H names' for girls rank #11 in popularity in 2024 and I thought it would be slightly lower. I absolutely adore the name Halle. It's a gorgeous name, from how it looks to how it sounds. It's probably my second favorite 'H' name ('Hester' btw is my first favorite) for a girl to be called (this may be ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฟ‍♀️cringe but... when I was in my 20s in the 2000s I had the nickname Halle for awhile because of my pixie haircut at the time. I was delighted of course! ๐Ÿ˜Š).

If Halle Berry had kept her birth name Maria, how would that have played out? ๐Ÿค” Her having the original name Halle made her original in Hollywood, perhaps making her stand out more. And I think if Halle Bailey's name would have been Hailey Bailey (a publicist has the same moniker) that would have been very cute and eye-catching but maybe too similar sounding? ๐Ÿค”

I like that there's two well-known Halles - one for the older generation and one for the younger generation. Halle is synonymous with beauty and I feel it will remain a rare name only a chosen few can pull off like the lovely ✔Berry or ✔Bailey.

NAME OF THE DAY: Malcolm

It is the ๐ŸŽ‚birthday of the late Malcolm X, so today I will speak on the name: Malcolm.

I think it's safe to say, the most known Malcolm is Malcolm X. He was born Malcolm Little (he considered “Little” a slave name and chose the “X” to signify his lost tribal name. He also changed his name to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz when he converted to Islamic faith.) and was a prominent civil rights leader for African American people during the 1950s and 1960s until he was unfortunately assassinated in 1965 (RIP).

Malcolm means 'disciple of Saint Columba' and is of Scottish origin. In 1992, Malcolm was at its peak point in popularity (about one in 2000+ babies were named Malcolm). Interestingly, the movie based on Malcolm X's life debuted in 1992. FYI, Denzel Washington, the star of the film Malcolm X, named his son Malcolm! Surprisingly, Nebraska where Malcolm X was born, isn't where the name is popular. Louisiana is where you're most likely to meet a Malcolm. As of 2024, Malcolm ranks as 314th most popular baby boy name.

I've always loved the name Malcolm (to the point it was on my personal baby names list for boys as a hyphenated middle name if I ever had a son. My late father (RIP) was an admirer of Malcolm X. His middle name was Lee and so I had in mind: Malcolm-Lee). It's a very masculine, very powerful name (especially if used to name a boy after  magnanimous ๐Ÿ‘‘ Malcolm X ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ).

Hopefully the great name Malcolm will stick around on baby names popularity lists for a long time to come!

NAME OF THE DAY: Leo

With the new Pope's name on everyone's lips, today I will be discussing the name: Leo.

Pope Leo XIV's birth name is Robert (ironic his middle name is the same as his predecessor, Francis)  Prevost. Pope Leo is not the first pope named Leo but the 14th. National Geographic details the history of the first Pope named Leo, Leo I, becoming so in A.D. 440. He was the first of three popes in all of history who earned the title "the Great."

The name Leo means: 'lion' in Latin. Behind the Name cites it can be a short form of longer names that start with Leo, such as Leonard (or Leonardo). It also is a cognate of the name Leon. Leo is usually a boy's name but on rare occasions Leo is sometimes given as a girl's name! (although often a shortened form of another name: Leonora for example or perhaps for the zodiac sign Leo)

The name Leo "is a deep sign of commitment to social issues," says Natalia Imperatori-Lee, the chair of religious studies at Manhattan University. Because of that, Pope Leo XIV's choice of name also suggests a continuation of much of Pope Francis' ministry.

Pope Leo XIV says  on his papal name choice: "I chose to take the name Leo XIV. There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution."

I like the name Leo. It's strong, has a rich history yet a bit of flair to it, especially for a pope in 2025.

Check out the informative read: What's In The Encyclical That Inspired Pope Leo's Name?

CELEBRITY BABY NAME PREDICTION: Megan Fox...

Actress Megan Fox welcomed a daughter this March with musician mgk and the name of their baby has yet to be revealed to the public.

Mgk made the birth announcement on Instagram in which he called his youngest daughter, "Celestial Seed" but he didn't mean that was her real name! He later clarified the name would be revealed by Megan Fox in due time.

I for one love weird, wacky, one-of-a-kind names so if they really had named their daughter Celestial Seed I wouldn't have batted an eye (okay, maybe at the Seed part). I actually really like Celestial as a first name. It's like the edgier version of Celeste.

I'm impatiently waiting to know what Megan Fox named her daughter. One of her sons has an unusual name (Journey) so perhaps she followed suit and named her girl a really unique name. But maybe she went the complete opposite route and named her baby girl something "normal" or common (another son of hers is named Noah, the #2 name for baby boys to be named in 2024). However, I highly doubt that.

Without further ado, my ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ“›Baby Name Prediction ๐ŸŽฒ is...

๐Ÿฅ...

๐Ÿ”ฅFire (as in Fire Fox. ๐ŸฆŠ)

Would that not be perfect?!? ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ And yes I'm being serious! ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️๐Ÿ˜… I haven't found anyone named Fire, just fire inspired baby names, so that would be an incredibly rare name to have.

My 1st runner up ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ“›Baby Name Prediction ๐ŸŽฒ is...

๐Ÿฅ...

๐Ÿ“›Phoenix

It's still very uncommon but Phoenix has been recognized as a first name. It's a really cool name (& fits nicely with Fox's last name specifically) to have due to the mythology behind the name. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

My 2nd runner up ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ“›Baby Name Prediction ๐ŸŽฒ is...

๐Ÿฅ...

๐Ÿ“›Marilyn

No, Marilyn is not a rare name in any sense. In past interviews it is said Fox has admired Marilyn Monroe. What better name for one of the most popular actresses of the 2000s to name her daughter, but the name of the most famous actress of all time? Marilyn is a charming, old-fashioned name that is forever linked to Monroe. But if Fox named her girl Marilyn (they would both have 'M' names which would be cute), the name would be linked to her for this generation. And I think that would be a pretty cool way to pay homage to such an icon. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I will make a follow up post when the name is announced so stay tuned! ๐Ÿ‘€

The Top 10 Baby Names of 2024

The Social Security Administration released their list of Top 10 Baby Names of 2024!

๐Ÿฅ...

I'm VERY surprised! ๐Ÿคฏ Most of the names are classic or "safe."๐Ÿฅฑ At the least, I was expecting one odd-one-out name. ๐Ÿ˜ค

These names are in fact popular, I've met/known thus far in my life: (1) ✔Noah, (3 or 4) ✔Jameses, (1) ✔Elijah, (1) ✔William, (1) ✔Mia, (2) ✔Evelyns and (1) ✔Sophia or ✔Sofia (I don't remember the spelling).

If I had to choose one name from male and female sides as my favorite: I'd pick James (because I love all things James Bond) or Noah (because of its Biblical significance. Btw James and Elijah are Biblical names too.) and Mia or Olivia (Mia sounds cute and Olivia sounds sophisticated). ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️

We're in 2025 and there's not one shocking or interesting name on the list? ๐Ÿคจ I'm very disappointed. ๐Ÿ™ Where is the creativity and originality? ๐Ÿง I guess that's left mostly for celebrity parents. ๐Ÿ˜

I wonder in ⏩2035 how will the list look? ๐Ÿค” Will it be similar? ๐Ÿ˜’ By then I'd love to see at least one uncommon, out-of-the-box name, for each side make it ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿพ and I'd be happy with that. ๐Ÿ˜€

The Marvelous Mothers Who Name Their Daughters After Themselves

It's Mother's Day today (Happy Mother's Day! ๐Ÿ’ to all the mothers out there) so I will be talking about mother / daughter names - specifically, the mothers who coolly choose to name their daughters after them!

We all know it is very common for fathers to name their sons (aka patronymics) after them but it is super rare for mothers to do the same and name their daughters after them (aka matronymics). And then if she does dare do so, it is even more rare if a Jr. follows the daughter's name. In the Washington City Paper article: Why Aren't Daughters Named For Their Mothers Called Juniors? it is all explained why matronymics is rare - basically because we live in a patriarchy ("in a male-dominated world, a son named after his father is commonplace"). Perhaps if the world at large were a matriarchy, there'd be more Olivia Jr.'s running around.

A great read via Atlantic is: The Women Naming Their Babies After Themselves. In it, one mother named Susannah, gave her daughter her name. She tells the story of at the hospital after giving birth, when she started to spell her baby's name, the record keeper interrupted her and was sure she was giving her own name instead. And when she corrected the record keeper, it was clear, "This lady couldn't comprehend that I would name my daughter after me." She added to Atlantic that, "I think there's something about that claiming of self that women haven't been encouraged to do," in regards to the weight that first names carry with identity (she interestingly brings up the reality that her own daughter may change her name when she's older and sees her name as a "working title").

I definitely am a very big fan of this very niche, important name trend. I have come across it personally twice in my life, starting with my own mother (RIP). Her middle name was Esther and she named (actually my late father made the suggestion) my oldest sister Esther as her first name. I always thought that was very, very sweet. Someone remarked (in a surprised manner) reading my mother's obituary and seeing two Esthers printed, that my sister and mother shared a name. I felt proud on behalf of my mother when I nodded in confirmation.

The second mother I knew who named their daughter after them was an acquaintance of my best friend at the time. Her name was Maybelline! (Yes, pronounced like the cosmetics brand. I'm not sure how she spelled it however.) I remember my bff saying how her daughter had the same name as her and I thought it was the coolest thing, especially with the unique name she has.

The only famous mother I knew of (prior to researching info for this post) that named her daughter after her is the rapper Remy Ma. Her real name is Reminisce (such a beautiful name!) and she said she named her daughter after herself because: "everybody always named their sons after their dads but I just feel like we need another Remy in the world."

๐Ÿ“‘I recently learned after publishing this post, that actress America Ferrera was named after her mother: “I’m named after my mother. In Latin America, April 14 is the Day of the Americas, and my mother was born on April 14, so my grandpa named her America”

I don't have children but if I ever did, I don't think however I would have the guts to name a daughter directly after myself. For me, it would sound too strange saying my name as someone else's name too, especially since my name (Sidra) is very uncommon (honestly I selfishly would want to be the only Sidra I personally know. And actually I have met another Sidra (different pronunciation but same spelling) in passing, which was weird enough! I couldn't however imagine a household with two Sidras in it!). But I do really, really, really love the idea of it.

๐Ÿ†Kudos to the bold women who have named daughters after themselves! ๐Ÿ‘ I hope more and more mothers catch onto the fact it is okay to name your daughter after you. It should be as equally normal as when a father names his son after him. Perhaps, one day.

NAME OF THE DAY: Kitt

To add to the previous Name Of The Day entry of Eartha, upon research of the name made famous by Eartha Kitt, I re-discovered her daughter was named after her as: Kitt

Kitt Shapiro is Eartha Kitt's only daughter. On why she named her daughter her last name: "She named me Kitt because she wanted to be sure that her name lived on." I think that is so endearing and super special because baby girls are rarely named after their mothers.

Kitt interestingly is not only a last name but also a unisex first name derived as nicknames for Katherine and Christopher (which is from the Greek name: Khristophoros and means 'bearing Christ').

I think the name is very cute but I prefer Kitt being used for girls over boys. I see Kitt and I think kitten immediately (all this time I sillily thought the meaning of Kitt had to do with kittens/cats... ๐Ÿ˜น), which is a soft, delicate creature, so I feel a baby girl being named Kitt (in Kitt Shapiro's case it fits perfectly since her mother played Catwoman at one point) fits more.
