TV CHARACTER NAME OF INTEREST: Seema

Carrie's new friend on the spin-off SATC show And Just Like That  — is ๐Ÿ“›Seema (played by ๐Ÿ“›Sarita Choudhury). When they first meet, she gives Carrie her business card and Carrie reads her name remarking:

"Seema. That's such a pretty name."

"It means boundary in Hindi which is hilarious because I have none," Seema says.

Of course I had to ๐Ÿ”Ž google the name Seema to make sure that is the correct meaning and it seems... to be.

Behind the Name defines SeemaFrom Sanskrit เคธीเคฎ (sฤซma) meaning "boundary, limit"

I really like Hindi names ๐Ÿ“„ plus that it's an 'S' name that starts with a ๐Ÿ”‰'see' sound  — so I agree with Carrie, ๐Ÿ“›Seema is a pretty name. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

I started going through the thread ๐Ÿง but had to stop because I want to see all the thousands of names ๐Ÿคฏ and that's impossible. ๐Ÿ˜ซ

NAME OF THE DAY: Pretty

With a voice as beautiful as hers, no wonder soprano opera singer Pretty Yende's name is actually just that  ๐ŸŽถPretty!

๐Ÿ“›Pretty the name, means the definition of what 'pretty' is of course. In Pretty Yende's case, she  explains in her South African culture, parents give their children names “to follow” to “bring them luck.” [for example: she has a brother named ๐Ÿ“›Prosper!] On her name, Pretty says growing up she dreaded her name, “I didn’t feel I was pretty at all." But she came around. Pretty explains her name is "delicatewith “so many subtleties” — suggestive of “wish and will,” sentiments that still guide her.

Behind the Name has Pretty as a variant of the Hindi name ๐Ÿ“›Priti. Popular Baby Names has supposed data on the name Pretty: between 1900 and 2022 there were 59 births of Pretty. But I didn't see Africa listed anywhere, which is where Pretty Yende was born. ๐Ÿค” There is also a few baby boys listed as being named (stage names mostly it seems) ๐Ÿ“›Pretty ๐Ÿคฏ ๐Ÿ“ขI don't like Pretty used for a boy at all! ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️ My Name Stats says ๐Ÿ“California is where the most Pretty named women are and ๐Ÿ“Nevada is next. Nameberry's take on the name Pretty: "For more exciting options with the same meaning, try ๐Ÿ“›Jolie๐Ÿ“›Marini, or ๐Ÿ“›Reiko.❤️ Love Jolie only. Nameberry has a complete list: ๐Ÿ“„100+ Pretty Girl Names๐Ÿ“› but ironically a lot of the names on it I do not find pretty. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I love the name ๐Ÿ“›Pretty. ๐Ÿ˜ It's so matter-of-fact. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ And it takes guts to give and wear this very pretty name. I wonder if Pretty Yende often gets the name compliment: "That's a pretty name." ๐Ÿ˜Š

NAME OF THE DAY: Betty

Today is cartoon icon ❤️Betty Boop's 95th birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ — so I will talk about her name that is as classic and cute as her: ๐Ÿ“›Betty❗

The name Betty is of Hebrew origin meaning "pledged to God." But it is also actually a shortened form of the name ๐Ÿ“›Elizabeth!

Nameberry says on Betty: "Betty's image is still very World War II, when Betty Grable was a hot pin-up girl and Betty was the all-American girls' name blanketing the country, second only to Mary from 1928 to 1934. We may be on the precipice of a Betty wave, thanks to Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, who recently chose it for their third daughter."

Sons have shockingly, reportedly been named ๐Ÿ“›Betty from 1904 - 1934 with a total of 3,619 boy Bettys! ๐Ÿคฏ I'm not a fan of using Betty as a unisex name ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️ but... Bet or Bett is a ๐Ÿ˜Ž cool little nickname too.

It's incredulous Betty once was the #2 ๐Ÿฅณ most Popular Baby Name for girls in the 1930s (when Betty Boop was born ๐Ÿ—ฏ️๐Ÿ–‹). Yet today, Betty's name in fact is ๐Ÿ›‡ "not in the top 1000 names for any year of birth beginning with 2000" via SSA's name popularity list. I find this sort of shocking. ๐Ÿคฏ Despite being an old-fashioned name, I assumed Betty was at least in the top 500 at some point up to the 2000s. ๐Ÿ˜ž

The states where the most Bettys live:๐Ÿ“California and ๐Ÿ“West Virginia. But i๐Ÿ“Nebraska, there is an adorable ๐Ÿ“›Betty Club, where "Only women named Betty join this club: ‘It is very nice for the Bettys." The social club with only Betty named women, was founded by Betty Krueger in 1994 because she had free time after retirement and it just seemed like a fun thing to do." To join: ๐Ÿ“ขEither you’re named Betty, or you go by the name Betty" and it is open to Bettys of all ages. The profile piece on this ๐Ÿ˜Ž cool club says: "Over the past 31 years, the club has congregated four times a year, growing to 25 members at one point. The Betty Club has 15 members, as well as several honorary members who are unable to meet in-person." I'm very jealous of Betty Club ๐Ÿ˜ญ and if I were named Betty I would of course love to join. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿพ‍♀️ I wonder if they take members who just really love the name Betty? ๐Ÿค”

I love the name Betty. ๐Ÿ’— My ๐Ÿ˜ obsession with Betty Boop is a big reason. But even so, Betty is just a sweet, nice name. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ The variations of Betty are really pretty too: ๐Ÿ“›Bette and ๐Ÿ“›Bettie especially. It is because of Betty Boop however, I've thought of naming a future daughter Betty๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ I've met only one Betty in my life so far. She was a tattoo artist (I don't know if Betty Rose ๐ŸŒน was her tattooist name or her real name however) and I wanted her to tattoo her namesake Betty Boop on me but unfortunately she didn't get to. ๐Ÿ˜ž The other Betty I knew of, she was the mother of someone I was dating, which was more incentive for me at the time to name a future daughter Betty (๐Ÿ“›Betty ๐Ÿ“›Lou I had in mind, Lou being my mother's name).

I really do hope Betty somehow starts to rise in name popularity ๐Ÿ“ˆ in future decades to come. ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿพ Betty is such a timeless name that it deserves a spot back onto the Popular Baby Names list. Here's to the beautiful name ๐Ÿ“›Betty seeing a resurgence in due time. ⏳

Sydney isn't an old man's name anymore thanks to Sydney Sweeney

The name bible for name enthusiasts, Nameberry, deems the name ๐Ÿ“›Sydney, an "original old man name" (akin to the name ๐Ÿ“›Monroe) adopted for girls (from ๐Ÿ“›Sidney), that has been having somewhat of a revival.

Thanks to in vogue model Sydney Sweeney (recently crowned 'The Most Wanted Woman In America'), the name Sydney is definitely not viewed in that light now. "Cool girl actress Sydney Sweeney, of Euphoria and White Lotus, is doing a lot to burnish Sydney's image," Nameberry praises.

The name Sydney is of French origin meaning, "Saint Denis." Behind the Name explains further on Sydney: "From a surname that was a variant of the surname SidneyThis is the name of the largest city in Australia, which was named for Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney in 1788. Formerly used by both genders, since the 1980s this spelling of the name has been mostly feminine."

Sydney is #288 on the Most Popular Baby Names list for girls in 2024. "Sydney's popularity may be down but she's not out," Nameberry assures, where as "Sydney was a hot girls' name in the 1990s." California is where the most girls and women name Sydney reside.

I have a love/"hate" relationship with the name Sydney I admit. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ I like the name Sydney because it originates from the name ๐Ÿ“›Sidney, which is personal to me — being it is my maternal grandfather's (RIP) first name (literally an "old man's name" ๐Ÿ˜ฏ). Here is where it gets tricky: my own name (I surprisingly was not named after my maternal grandfather) begins with Sid (so that is what people see/read first) but it is ๐Ÿ“ขnot pronounced "Sid" as is Sidney. Yet everyone assumes it is pronounced like Sidney which is wrong and which has irked me most of my life (until very recently actually as I embraced using the stage name Sid). ๐Ÿ˜ซ An ex once suggested I name our future son Sidney had we had one together, and I didn't want to tell him I was against the name! ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿพ‍♀️ Now actually, I would consider the idea ๐Ÿ’ก...

With Sydney being spelled as is, it can be 'hard' and confusing. ๐Ÿค” I immediately think Sidney still and so I start writing it S-i-d usually out of habit. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฟ‍♀️ When I see Sydney I also think of the sweeter ๐Ÿ“›Syndee (alternative spelling of the name ๐Ÿ“›Cindy). I do however, like how Sydney looks rather if it were spelled as its origin name Sidney (it doesn't bother me if ๐Ÿ“›Sidney is used for a girl but on the flipside I do not like when ๐Ÿ“›Sydney is used for a boy ๐Ÿ˜ฌ— the S-y-d gives it a more feminine, plus edgy look. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

I've met one Sydney so far — a tattoo artist — and she definitely was a cool girl. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

Will ๐Ÿ“›Sydney  become the epitome of a ๐Ÿ˜Ž "cool girl's name" in the 2020s? Quite possibly. Nameberry swears, "she's arguably still cool." I definitely think it will start to rise further up  on the baby name charts ๐Ÿ“ˆ in popularity with Sydney Sweeney being so sought-after.

NAME OF THE DAY: Monroe

Today is the anniversary of the beloved Marilyn Monroe's death (RIP). Therefore, I will speak on having as a first name, her ๐ŸŒŸ great last name: ๐Ÿ“›Monroe

Monroe (wasn't Marilyn's real last name nor was Marilyn her real first name FYI) is a Scottish surname meaning 'from the mouth of the Roe'  a river in Ireland.

"Marilyn Monroe is a famous female namesake, but her smart Scottish surname feels equally usable for either sex," Nameberry says on thoughts of using Monroe as a first name for boys. Monroe actually is used as a boy's name 90% of the time, SSA data shows. I didn't know this. ๐Ÿคฏ I thought because of Marilyn's popularity it was used mainly as a feminine first name. ๐Ÿค”

Singer Mariah Carey's twin daughter is named Monroe, after Marilyn Monroe. Carey shares in her memoir she, "wanted both of her kids to share her same initials so was searching for names that started with the letter "M." Monroe's name was ultimately inspired by actress and model Marilyn Monroe." Nameberry believes Carey's, "use of Monroe as a girls’ name did much to revive this Old Man name, a la Sydney, as a newly fashionable choice for girls." However, Monroe was surprisingly way down ๐Ÿ — at #571 on the Most Popular Baby names for girls ๐Ÿ“‰ in 2024. I really thought Monroe would at least be in the top 300. ๐Ÿค” The state where the most girls and women named Monroe live, can be found in Texas.

I love ๐Ÿ’— the name ๐Ÿ“›Monroe! Very briefly I had in mind to use Monroe as a middle name if I had a daughter because I'm a bit of a big Marilyn fan. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพ‍♀️ I love the name Monroe more when used mainly for a girl's name because I just automatically think Marilyn when I hear Monroe. I can't see Monroe used as a boy's name weirdly but of course it is still cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž when used for a boy. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

NAME OF THE DAY: August

Today is the start of August, so I will talk about the month name: ๐Ÿ“…๐Ÿ“›August

August is not only the eight month of the year in the Gregorian calendar, named in honor of Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor — but a word, an adjective that means: 'inspiring reverence or admiration; of supreme dignity or grandeur.'

SSA data shows that 91% of the time August is used as a boy's name. August as a boy's name is in fact very popular, being at #88 on the Most Popular Baby Names in 2024. August is also used as a girl's name but it's not as popular and is at #910 on the Most Popular Baby Names for girls in 2024. The most Augusts can be found in New York and Louisiana.

I like the name ๐Ÿ“›August, it's a month name which is always a fun name choice to give/have. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ But I do prefer August as a boy's name more than August for a girl's name. Maybe it's because I see 'Gus' in August and because of its origin name ๐Ÿ“›Augustus, that I see August more of a masculine name than a feminine one.
